David Derrin Multi-disciplinary ArtistAbout David Derrin
Multi-disciplinary Artist.

I have been a maker of fine furniture for thirty years. Establishing the first production craft woodworks in Western Australia.

During those years I also found a form of expression through sculpture working in a variety of media but a real breakthrough came in a series of character based chairs. These whimsical pieces allowed me to start a collaboration of skill and communication.

Currently painting is the discipline that gives me the greatest opportunity to tell a story and as a visual artist I draw a lot of inspiration from books, poetry and music. I collect quotes I read and use them as a source of narrative to paint. However, I do like to make a social comment, I see so much discontent and conflict around me that I am inspired to use my skills to return this message. In my paintings I use large figurative stencils; usually photographs of friends or ordinary people in public places transformed by scale, colour, folklore and framing, depicting those very issues that would otherwise be taken for granted.

Influences for me are our current social commentators such as Nick Cave, Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei and cutting edge Graff artist Ron English. Further to this I reference Francis Bacon and heed to the philosophies of the Dada movement.
